Nielsen/NetRatings show that in Dec 2007 Google reached 84.51% of the Internet population in the UK with Microsoft reaching 78.91% and Yahoo! quite well behind at only 52.52%. (Nielsen//NetRatings, 2008 [online])
Is this the full picture? I’m skeptical as it may be the case that Microsoft, setting itself as the default home page when loaded, could be being overriden by users who then go on to use Google to search.
In my experience it is simply the case that Google returns more hits per £1 of budget than the other choices and until they catch up it really is a no brainer!
It might be as MSN and Yahoo! will undoubtedly fight back.
In response to Google Docs and Spreadsheets Microsoft has been mulling over whether to release their applications in a similar way. If they do familiarity with the Microsoft interface might convince users back.
If this happens it might pay to be on MSN earlier, rather than later, in terms of page rankings.
