Consider how many times you have navigated away from a site because you simply did not understand what to do.
Don’t let your customers do this by making sure you have:
Clear hierarchies so users can see relative importance.
Stick to web conventions - menus at the top or left - underlined links -search box top right - logo top left.
Make sure users know where they are - use a breadcrumb menu.
Make what is clickable obvious - If a user can’t see a link then you leave it to chance they follow it.
Keep it simple - pages that are too busy leave users in a state of confusion caused by all the choice.
Always label required fields - sticking to the web convention of using a * for a required field.
Always try and go down a form not across - you’ll be amazed how visitors just don’t see fields to the right.
Keep forms short and to the point - asking for non essential information just turns users off and they leave.
Get someone other than yourself or developer to test your site. Watch what they do and be critical. It will pay off.
